We are looking for a permanent, Full-Time Community Services Counsellor to work in our Community Services and Court Program. This is a union position working 35 hours per week. A flexible work schedule is required to meet the needs of clients.

The Community Services Counsellor provides family violence and abuse counseling, safety planning, case planning, parenting support, and information and referrals to community resource services that are available to support the client’s journey toward a life free of family violence and abuse.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING

  • Develop a client caseload consisting of clients who have contacted the Family Violence and Abuse Helpline, resided at the Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter, or have accessed a Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter program.
  • Respond to requests for service within twenty-four (24) hours.
  • Provide counseling, safety planning, case planning, parenting support, and information and referrals to available services.
  • Complete on-going Feedback Informed Treatment Scales with the clients to monitor progress and adjust as required in real time based on clients’ feedback.
  • Consult and collaborate with other programs within FearIsNotLove that the clients have accessed.
  • At times, may be required to provide support, information and referrals to individuals who have perpetrated the violence and abuse.
  • Complete and maintain clients’ documentation requirements and applicable administrative tasks.
  • Attend and participate in required committees and networks.

WHAT YOU BRING TO OUR MISSION

  • Bachelor of Social Work or Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences with at least two (2) years related experience in community-based services, and/or crisis intervention. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Knowledge and experience in working with family violence and abuse.
  • Must be comfortable with client-centered approaches and who are familiar with the response-based approach (Dr. Allan Wade and Dr. Linda Coates) and Feedback Informed Treatment (Dr. Scott Miller)
  • Commitment to understanding cultural humility, diversity and supporting equality of opportunities.
  • Strong knowledge and linkage to external services and systems that are available for clients.
  • Effective crisis management skills displayed by in depth exploration and by providing calm, clear, concise direction.
  • Ability to work together in a team setting by being positive, professional and approachable.
  • The ability to maintain professional boundaries with counselors and clients.
  • The ability to be discreet and maintain confidentiality to safeguard the security of individuals and children experiencing family violence and abuse.
  • Strong communication skills (oral and written) in English. A second language would be an asset.
  • Strong critical thinking skills in complex situations that align with the policies and procedures.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, client management databases, and Adobe.
  • Keen attention to detail and strong work ethic.

IMPORTANT DETAILS YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • A flexible work schedule is essential. Evening work may be required to meet the needs of clients.
  • This position requires a valid driver’s license and use of a personal vehicle. Mileage will be reimbursed.
  • Effective January 1, 2022 being fully vaccinated Covid-19 is a condition of employment.
  • Ongoing training and development is a required condition of this position.
  • A criminal records search and an intervention record check are conditions of employment.
  • In accordance with Canadian immigration requirements, priority will be given to Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada.
