Job Description

Project Name: YWCA City Shift

Project Background and Role:

YWCA City Shift aims to make our region more equitable, prosperous and just by supporting Metro Vancouver cities to challenge assumptions, incorporate diverse perspectives and support actions that serve the entire community.

Since its launch in 2021, the City Shift project has advocated for equitable planning and policy development across Metro Vancouver municipalities and beyond. Through targeted government relations, community engagement and with the creation of our Equity Kickstart Guide and training workshop series, City Shift has successfully demystified tools like Gender-Based Analysis Plus (GBA Plus) and provided practical resources to local governments on how they can work towards becoming more inclusive and equitable.

Now, we are seeking a driven and enthusiastic change-maker to lead the next phase of this exciting project, which will focus on working in partnership with people who have lived and living experience to advocate for deeper, more impactful systemic change.

What you’ll be doing:

Create and support a peer-centred advocacy council

Research peer advocacy models with the goal of recommending an approach to adopt.

Recruit, convene, and support a peer advocacy council comprised of YWCA program participants who have lived experience.

Organize council curriculum and capacity building activities to achieve objectives. Steward and support council through project lifecycle.

Co-create and implement an advocacy strategy alongside council members.

Community and government engagement

Manage outreach and relationships with a diverse network of community members, partners, public servants, elected officials and individuals from the academic, business, and community sectors.

Organize and lead meetings.

Present to city council and/or other community or business groups.

Conduct key informant interviews and focus groups, as necessary.

Support recruitment of, and work collaboratively with, researchers and consultants, as necessary.

With support from the Marketing Communications department, execute public engagement activities and events.

Write briefing notes and other materials, such as presentations and reports.

Manage project budget, with support from the Senior Manager, Advocacy and Government Relations.

Lead the development of a learning module and/or other materials, resources and guides on peer-centred advocacy.

Collaborate with fund development and finance teams to report to project funder.

Other duties, as necessary.

What you’ll need:

Bachelor's degree or college certificate in public policy, education, political science, communications, or related field. Or equivalent work experience.

At least 3 years’ experience in a non-profit or community organizing environment.

Experience in advocacy and/or community organizing is considered an asset.

Project management experience, including demonstrated ability to manage timelines, deliverables, and budgets.

Superior understanding of public policy and social equity.

Strong understanding of the municipal landscape across Metro Vancouver.

Strong office and administration skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office: Word, Excel and Outlook.

Commitment to using an intersectional feminist lens.

Self-driven, highly motivated and organized.

Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team.

A valid clear criminal record check (including working with vulnerable populations) is required.

The YWCA Metro Vancouver’s COVID-19 vaccination policy is currently suspended and as a result, vaccination from COVID-19 is not required at this time. However, should circumstances change and the YWCA deem it necessary to reintroduce such policy, you may be required to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 in order to be eligible to continue performing your duties.
