Varsteel Calgary is looking for an experienced and competent Shipper Dispatcher who thrives in a fast-paced, dynamic environment that is driven to meet our customer’s needs and works well in a team!
The selected candidate will be responsible for making sure the movement of freight is coordinated and executed successfully according to our customers’ needs. Through consistent time management and closely monitoring the progress of each driver, aiming for maximum efficiency of all deliveries scheduled for that day and ensuring they get completed.
The Shipper Dispatcher contributes to the overall success of the branch by building, optimizing and overseeing the daily runs/delivery schedule. Managing the schedule while working to resolve any logistical problems that arise and communicating with drivers to ensure they receive any important messages. Assist and support in all aspects of Shipping, Receiving, and Inventory department and providing daily operational support of overall branch operations and equipment maintenance.

The responsibilities of the Shipper Dispatcher include, but are not limited to: • Plan, organize and actively build delivery runs to ensure they are efficient and cost-effective • Receive, coordinate and prioritize additional delivery requests from Sales or Management, ensuring timely delivery and accuracy. • Directing activities related to dispatching, routing, and tracking of Varsteel trucks • Effective and professional communication with drivers and carriers. Serving as the primary point of contact for truck drivers • Updating Managers and regularly -Maintain accurate and up-to-date information on dispatch activities, and shipment statuses. • Planning, directing, the maintenance and repair of the fleet operation (tractors and the trailers) owned by Varsteel • Monitor repairs submitted by the driver and ensuring all the equipment is well maintained. • Deal with conflicts that may arise and be able to resolve them quickly and solve problems • Effectively resolve and address sales staff or customer's concerns with deliveries • Proactively identify and address any scheduling conflicts or issues that may arise during the dispatch process. • Work closely with managers to optimize the efficiency of the dispatch process to effectively and efficiently dispatch daily deliveries. • Performs other duties within the Shipping, Receiving and Inventory Department and Branch as required.
Skill Requirements • Computer-savvy with a high proficiency in basic computer programs (Microsoft Office) • Working knowledge of logistics GPS systems, geography and aptitude to learn new software systems. • Ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple tasks simultaneously, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment. • Demonstrated ability to make sound decisions responding effectively to challenges, often under stress and with limited information • Highly developed communication, organization, and critical thinking skills • Detail-oriented mindset with a commitment to accuracy and efficiency in operations • Effective time management – ability to manage self, and time and balance multiple priorities and plan effectively. • Ability to remain focused, positive and navigate stressful situations. • Proactive individual who can hold themselves accountable for their actions and for producing expected results.
Qualifications/Experience • Previous experience in transportation/logistics / dispatching or a combination of transferable skills and experience • Experience in equipment maintenance • Customer service experience and possess professional phone mannerisms • Previous experience in office administration • Excellent knowledge of Calgary & Alberta highway networks and understanding of the geography
