Job Title: Youth & Family Outreach Worker

Reports to: Executive Director

Role:

Works with youth aged 10-19 and their families to assess challenges, set goals and make progress on those goals. Helping conversation matched to the needs of the youth and families. Basic mental health supports. Provides young people with an increased sense of community by familiarizing themselves with services and activities within the centre and elsewhere in the community. To contribute to the overall functionality of the Quadra Village Community Centre and its programs/community building.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Works with youth and their families to assess and plan for needs, identify required resources, and support linkages
  • Facilitates education and support groups with parents/caregivers/youth and other identified community members
  • Facilitates parent/teen informal mediation (family community meetings)
  • Liaises with caregivers, parents, MCFD staff, and any other relevant contacts/organizations
  • Assists youth and their families with effective system navigation
  • Assesses youth safety and wellness and provides mental health support as needed
  • Attends community and case related meetings
  • Facilitates parent support and mentoring
  • Facilitates peer mentoring and support for youth
  • Participates in/facilitates planning meetings
  • Makes referrals to community resources and assists with system navigation as appropriate
  • Facilitates goal setting and steps towards attainment
  • Facilitates constructive, client-centred helping conversations and basic counselling
  • Prepares regular written and verbal reports as required by the Executive Director
  • Responds to general inquiries, by phone and in person regarding QVCC, shares in the physical work of maintaining the centre and helps implement key events.
  • Participates to ensure a safe environment; observes potential hazards; remedies and/or reports to the appropriate person
  • To be familiar with and implement QVCC’s (Downtown Blanshard Advisory Committee’s) policies, procedures, and practices
  • To perform other related duties as required by the Direct Supervisor and Executive Director

Qualifications:

  • Commitment to anti-oppressive, decolonial, and anti-racist practice
  • Ability to work with integrity and respect in a diverse, multi-cultural community centre
  • Post-secondary degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., Child and Youth Care, Social Work or Counselling Psychology or any other degree acceptable to MCFD)
  • A minimum of 2 years related work experience and extensive knowledge of youth and community resources

Hours of Work:

  • This is a job-sharing position at 21 hours per week
  • Includes some evening and/or weekend work
  • Flexible schedule based on agency and program needs
  • Hour worked on-site as well as within community

Benefits and Remuneration:

  • $28.50/hour and increases with tenure
  • 3 weeks paid vacation
