Work Arrangements
The Institute of Urban Ecology in the Faculty of Science & Technology is seeking a Faculty Director. This limited-term faculty coordinator position will run from September 1, 2024 to August 31, 2025, with possible extension to August 31, 2027. The position carries a two-section time release for the 24/25 academic year. This position will require travel between the New Westminster and Coquitlam campuses.

The Role
The Institute of Urban Ecology ( IUE ) is an operational unit within the Faculty of Science and Technology, responsible for a variety of programs that support environmental awareness and sustainability with an emphasis on the urban environment. Programs include, but are not limited to, research activities, outreach activities at community events, citizen science initiatives, and environmental outreach workshops with school partners throughout the Lower Mainland.
Reporting to the Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology, the Faculty Coordinator will lead the Institute in supporting and promoting all operations and activities.
Responsibilities
Job duties and tasks:
- Create new programs, content and opportunities to promote the mandate of the IUE .
- Proactively pursue grant opportunities in support of IUE activities.
- Coordinate research projects related to urban ecology with faculty, staff, students and external partners.
- Prepare reports and papers as needed to disseminate research results and report on IUE activities.
- Make presentations to promote urban ecology and the activities of the IUE at public events.
- Respond to public enquiries about IUE programs and activities.
- Oversee and ensure the scientific merit of IUE outreach and research programs and activities.
- Vet material created by the IUE Coordinator.
- Participates in various budgetary processes that affect the department.
- Ensure the accuracy of website content related to the IUE .
- Provide content expertise in ecological science for program activities.
- Support coordination and planning of IUE outreach activities and programs.
- Prepare annual reviews for the IUE and complete a comprehensive program review as required.
- Perform other related duties as required.
The successful candidate must have the following minimum qualifications:
- Masters Degree in an ecology-related discipline (PhD preferred)
- Teaching experience, preferably at the college or university level
- Field research experience
- Experience in writing grant applications and administering successful grants
- Ability to apply a fiscally-responsible approach to administration of IUE funds
- Strong interpersonal skills with students, staff, faculty and external partners
- Proven ability to problem solve day to day issues
- Able to work independently on projects
- Strong verbal, written, and communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to supervise, organize, plan and schedule, train and motivate and adjust to a changing environment
