With a dedicated staff of more than 4,000 physicians, clinicians, researchers, educators and support staff, CAMH offers outstanding clinical care to more than 38,000 patients each year. The organization conducts groundbreaking research, provides expert training to health care professionals and scientists, develops innovative health promotion and prevention strategies, and advocates on public policy issues at all levels of government.
Reporting to the Chief Legal Officer (CLO), the Corporate Legal Director will lead a legal team that supports the corporate legal services and the research legal services for CAMH to provide comprehensive legal counsel and support to our hospital. This role involves developing and implementing legal strategies, advising on complex healthcare regulation, multi-party research agreements and contracts, and managing legal risk associated with the hospital’s operations.
This key role provides legal and strategic advice and oversight for a broad spectrum of Hospital operational matters, including compliance, business/clinical administration, contracts (including support to corporate/commercial and research lawyers), and legal proceedings. With expertise in various aspects of the law, including the statutes and regulations that govern the delivery of healthcare and public hospitals in Ontario, corporate/commercial transactions, health privacy, research and knowledge of Ontario’s health sector, the Corporate Legal Director advises and works collaboratively with the Executive Leadership Team, Research leadership and senior management across the Hospital to bring issues to the best resolution.
Key Responsibilities: Provide expert legal counsel on corporate matters, including procurement, information technology, privacy, research and other operational and relationship-based contracts, as well as compliance.
Develop and implement policies and procedures, legal templates and work processes as required, for the hospital as they relate to the corporate and research legal services portfolio.
Manage a team of lawyers and legal support staff (for example, law clerk and/or legal assistant).
Collaborate with the Chief Legal Officer to inform the management of the broader legal services portfolio.
Collaborate with senior management to align legal strategies with CAMH mission, vision and values, enterprise risk tolerance, and organizational and departmental goals.
Represent CAMH in legal proceedings and negotiations, and/or provide instructions to external counsel representing CAMH.
Support CAMH’s compliance with federal and provincial laws and regulations.
Conduct legal risk assessment and develop mitigation strategies as they relate to corporate and research legal matters.
As a well-qualified candidate, you combine seasoned legal experience with management and leadership skills in a large complex organization, ideally in the health care sector. You flourish in an environment that values collaboration, a consultative approach, and seek out practical solutions. You apply strategic thinking to find solutions that meet the hospital’s needs and objectives. An energetic and enthusiastic team player, you are able to manage competing priorities. Other valued assets include knowledge of corporate law, health research law, privacy and data law, procurement law, governance practices and the health care legal landscape. You have at least 8 to 10 years legal experience, as well as experience in leadership.
CAMH is committed to creating an equitable and inclusive workplace that is free from any form of discrimination and harassment. We actively encourage individuals from equity-deserving communities, including First Nations, Métis and Inuit, racialized communities, LGBTQ2S+ communities, women, and people with disabilities (including those who have experienced mental health and substance use challenges) to apply for our available positions. We appreciate the interest of all applicants and wish to ensure that all candidates have an equitable opportunity. If you require any accommodations during the interview process, please inform us.
