Major Duties As a Systems Designer/Engineer, Nuclear you are responsible for learning technical aspects of a project and overseeing systems engineering activities specific to the project. You will work with the customer, ATS project manager, and the ATS design, assembly, and software teams to design the solutions that meet the customer's requirements. You will get the opportunity to develop into a technical leader by taking on the following roles: Understanding the customer's technology and process and becoming the subject matter expert in the equipment/system. Providing project technical clarity by defining system requirements and validating system capability. Being the technical leader on the system from cradle to launch, guiding the design team in ensuring project technical requirements are met. You will support technical execution of the project, contribute to risk mitigation, and drive improvements in quality, cost, and delivery. Specific Responsibilities Subject Matter Expertise Learn the customer process and become the local expert in it, to support the design, integration, and verification of the machines/tools/systems. Prepare component and system level analysis, calculations, or studies including but not limited to: Structural integrity Functional capability, drive sizing - speeds, strokes, loads, etc. Accuracy, Gauge R&R Pressure/flow/heat transfer Compliance with applicable codes and standards. Prepare technical project documents such as Failure Modes and Effects Analyses and Safety Risk Assessments, ALARA reports, installation/commissioning plans, operating sequence/flowcharts, execution storyboards, operating and maintenance manuals, etc. Requirements Definition and Verification Assist in compiling and documenting design requirements, technical/functional specifications, etc. Learn, understand and flow down customer and industry requirements, including applicable codes and standards, to ensure overall machine compliance. Prepare vendor technical specifications and interface with vendors of process critical third-party equipment, including acceptance testing and buy-off of equipment at vendor site. Using tools such as a Verification Matrix, plan for verification of all design/system requirements. Lead requirements verification by evaluating engineering drawings and specifications for conformance to design inputs/requirements, performing analysis (calculations, simulations, etc.) and testing (POP testing, design validation testing, factory acceptance testing, site acceptance testing). Lead planning of Acceptance Testing, including preparation of test plans, ensuring availability of mock-ups, fixtures, test support equipment, etc., and performing test execution with the customer. Project Technical Leadership Be the project technical lead in Design Plan preparation, understand responsibilities for implementation, and perform design related activities in accordance with the Design Plan. Perform problem solving and coordination of project engineering work. Provide project support during system startup, integration and buy-off. Lead design reviews with customers, vendors, and internal design groups. Lead project technical risk mitigation activities during design stage, preparing CTRAs (concept technical risk assessments), and performing POP (proof of principle) testing. Manage project technical risk throughout the project: highlight high risk areas and create mitigation plans to reduce risk. Work with ‘process critical’ third party equipment vendors to ensure compliance with requirements and adherence to budget and schedule. Additional Responsibilities Assist in activities for product improvements or first-of-a-kind innovations. Recognize the onset of technical problems in various disciplines and support development of solutions. Coordinate the collection and dissemination of technical information within the company and with the customer. Participate in customer meetings and resolve engineering and customer/project management issues. Learn and comply with applicable codes and standards, accepted engineering practices, and ATS standards. Follow engineering processes and provide feedback to assist in continuous improvement initiatives, including development of standards and procedures. Support development of design concepts and labour hours estimates for quote preparation. Strictly follow CSA N299/B51/N285/NQA Quality requirements as defined within the ATS QA manuals and procedures. Willing to work as a Nuclear Energy Worker (NEW), and work in radioactive environments including nuclear site work. Ensure that all business activities are performed with the highest ethical standards and in compliance with the ATS Code of Business Conduct. Perform other specific duties or projects, as assigned. Qualifications Education A post-secondary degree in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Systems Design, Electrical, or Computer Engineering, Engineering Physics, Engineering Science, or equivalent. Experience A thorough understanding of machine design and build, and structured problem solving. Competent in mechanical CAD software (SolidWorks preferred), capable of designing tooling from sketches or verbal concepts, with a working knowledge of common machine shop techniques. Prior experience in mechanical, electrical, controls or systems engineering support, preferably in an automation environment and with customer interaction is an asset. Experience in nuclear tooling/equipment development is an asset. Excellent communication skills and ability to lead or work as part of a multi-disciplinary project team.
