We are looking for an ambitious, hard-working, and business-savvy lawyer to join our Legal and Regulatory Affairs team at Emera Energy as Director, Legal. You will serve as a key legal advisor to our energy marketing, trading and asset management business. Responsibilities will include contract drafting and review, regulatory compliance, providing legal advice to our trading team and management, advising on risk mitigation, and generally protecting the Company’s interests.
Based in Halifax Nova Scotia, Emera Energy is a wholly owned subsidiary of Emera Inc. (TSX:EMA). We market and trade natural gas and power and provide a full suite of energy management services to our customers across North America.

As Director, Legal, you will:
Work closely with the trading and origination teams to draft, revise, analyze and negotiate a wide range of natural gas and power marketing contracts, including NAESBs, ISDAs, natural gas transportation and storage agreements, asset management agreements, energy management agreements, financial derivatives, and associated credit documentation.
Communicate and interact with traders, risk management, and other departments to facilitate efficient contract negotiation and customer onboarding, ensuring compliance with the Company’s credit, risk, and know-your-customer policies.
Enhance the Company’s culture of compliance and minimize regulatory risk by managing aspects of the Company’s compliance management system, providing legal analysis of regulatory changes and new service offerings, updating and drafting compliance manuals, policies and training documentation, and assisting with the Company’s annual compliance week and other training initiatives.
Provide expert advice to the business on risk mitigation and compliance, including FERC regulations, CFTC/Dodd-Frank regulations, ISO/RTO market rules, exchange rules, anti-corruption, and import/export requirements.
Work with power generation facility staff to draft and negotiate a range of commercial agreements, as well as provide advice on compliance with applicable laws.
Handle commercial disputes and related commercial litigation as they arise, including overseeing external counsel, as needed.
Oversee corporate governance matters including legal entity management and director and officer changes.
Manage or assist with various Company projects ranging from cyber-security preparedness and response, mergers and acquisitions, financings and corporate reorganizations as needed.
Manage one or more legal team members.
Other duties as assigned.

Professional with the highest ethical standards and integrity.
A law degree (LL.B or Juris Doctor) from an accredited law school and eligibility to practice in Nova Scotia. Admission to the bar in a U.S. jurisdiction would also be considered.
6+ years post-call relevant commercial and transactional legal experience at a reputable law firm or in-house environment.
Previous experience with energy trading contracts, regulatory compliance or risk management is highly desirable.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with team members to achieve the Company’s goals and maintain and strengthen relationships with our clients and key stakeholders.
Business acumen that enables you to offer practical legal advice that fully appreciates the business risks and opportunities of a particular transaction or matter.
Super organized and detail oriented.
Clear, effective, and practical contract drafting skills, with a touch of creativity.
Display enthusiasm while maintaining a high level of productivity in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
Demonstrated self-starter with excellent problem-solving skills.
Effective oral and written communication skills, with demonstrated success in presenting ideas and legal concepts in a practical and non-legalese manner.
