Position Overview: The Canadian Safety Director is responsible for leading the company EH&S program across the Canadian region. This position works with government, regulatory, and corporate bodies to ensure Canadian compliance. It protects Railserve Canada’s reputation and opportunities for growth through maintenance of an excellent safety record and standing with recognized boards. It protects Railserve’s current contracts by reinforcing a proven safety culture, establishes necessary policies to protect workers, and uses data to identify trends and opportunities to drive improvements. Finally, as a member of the Leadership team, sets safety strategy to support the Canadian Strategy and works with the leadership team to establish objectives and tactical items to deliver. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Strategic Objectives: Establishes 3-5 year Canadian safety goals, in conjunction with Leadership team and Canadian Strategy Designs and implements strategies to guide and deliver on goals Craft annual objectives and tactical plans in line with overall safety goals and strategies Directs activities of regional support members Conduct regular analysis of statistical information, distributing relevant performance measurement reports Ensure Canadian Operations meet Government, Regulatory and Corporate compliance: Monitors the company’s safety standards and program effectiveness in accordance with Federal/Provincial regulations (i.e., OH&S, IROR/CROR etc.) as applicable. Maintains oversight and management of the Railserve Federal Safety Management System requirements Interfaces with Transport Canada & Alberta Transportation for any program or audit requirements Leads the Certificate of Recognition program for Railserve Canada Ensures Canadian content in ISNetworld is accurate by providing support to the corporate safety coordinator Safety Culture: Stay current on industry best practices and champion the design and implementation within Railserve Canada Design and coordinate Canada Wide safety events and communication in line with strategic objectives Data based safety management: Conduct regular analysis of safety related stats/information to identify trends and design programs to reduce trends Injury Management Operational Support: Participates as a member of the start-up team for new operations in the Canadian region by integrating EHS requirements throughout all phases of the process Engages in the RFP process with the operations and sales & marketing team Available to work days, evenings, and weekends as needed Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education and/or Experience: Five to ten years related experience in a safety position; or equivalent combination of education and experience in a rail environment. 2 year safety related certificate or higher from an accredited educational institution. Preferred: 5+ years in Transportation industry Preferred: 3+ years in Oil/Gas or Chemical production plant Skills and Competencies: Demonstrated experience in Root Cause Investigation and Causal investigation Excellent knowledge of OSHA standards and Canadian Federal and provincial safety legislation. Solid knowledge of potentially hazardous materials or practices in the workplace. Familiarity with writing health and safety policies and procedures. Proficiency in conducting data analysis and reporting statistics. Working knowledge of safety management software, EH&S Strong communication and teamwork skills. Possesses strong leadership skills and ability to implement positive change. Provide a positive leadership example by demonstrating safe behaviors and encouraging those behaviors in others. Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret legislation, governmental regulations, and technical procedures. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of instructions and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Safety certification or degree from an accredited educational institution. CRSP designation preferred but not required.
