BACKGROUND

The BC Non-Profit Housing Association provides leadership and support to members in creating and supporting a high standard of affordable housing throughout British Columbia. BCNPHA members are primarily non-profit housing providers. Other members include individuals and organizations that care about affordable housing. The Asset Management Department provides Energy Management and Capital Planning services to non-profit housing providers with the goal to reduce operating costs, prolong existing housing stock, and increase housing stock size to better meet rising housing demands.

The Asset Management Department is searching for someone to join our team of Building Energy Specialists. This role will be a full-time position assisting the Asset Management Department carry out its mandate to provide support to the non-profit housing sector.

BCNPHA is the umbrella association for non-profit housing providers in BC providing services, education, events and advocacy to over 800 non-profit housing societies who provide more than 60,000 units of affordable housing at more than 2,000 sites across the province. Please note that BCNPHA does not own or manage any of these buildings.

POSITION SUMMARY

The position is a technical services and project coordination role related to energy analysis and building retrofits. The specialist coaches non-profit housing societies, primarily within the Lower Mainland, through Provincial (BC Housing, Clean BC), Utility, Federal and other funding programs, including Low-Carbon Electrification measures and supports BCNPHA’s service areas to advance and sustain the non-profit housing sector.

Key responsibilities

Program/Services Support:

· Benchmark non-profit buildings

o Gather and analyze energy data to provide information and analysis to contracted engineers, non-profit housing societies and other partners

o Provide quality assurance, troubleshooting, and follow up where needed

o Support data imports into Energy Star Portfolio Manager and BCNPHA database

o Support sector wide building benchmarking initiatives

o Analyze data for business case development, retrofit estimates and potential project feasibility

· Conduct Energy Audits

o Travel to sites or virtually collect building system information, identify energy conversation measures, and write reports

o Perform outreach and site visit coordination across the province – arrange appointments, accommodation, travel, and report expenses

· Coach non-profits with building retrofit projects

o Coordinate retrofit projects for non-profit societies, working with staff and board, consultants, contractors, utility companies, and various funding agencies

o Provide technical support to non-profit housing providers to identify, plan, and implement capital and energy efficiency retrofits, particularly potential low-carbon electrification (LCE) projects

Data Management:

· Assist, identify and follow through with emerging opportunities to add additional relevant data to BCNPHA databases.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Experience and Skills

· Knowledge of energy analysis, energy conservation measures, buildings, building construction, and building energy systems is required

· Working knowledge of building control systems, building envelope design, low-carbon electrification and Federal and/or BC-based rebate programs would be a considerable asset

· Post-secondary education in a relevant field

· Graduate degree would be an asset, such as a Masters in sustainability and planning, BCIT SEMAC certificate, UBC Masters in Clean Energy, Douglas BERM certificate

· Previous experience in energy benchmarking would be an asset

· A working knowledge of non-profit organizations and operations would be an asset

· Ability to gather, analyze and synthesize complex or diverse information skillfully

· Strong problem-solving skills, both independently and group problem solving situations

· Adapts for changing conditions; communicates changes and progress and meets challenges with resourcefulness

· Identifies ways to improve process and quality, developing alternative approaches and ideas

· Strong professional verbal and written communication skills - communicating in a timely manner appropriate with staff and partners

· Proficient computer (MS office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and database skills

· Experience and a high level of proficiency in preparing presentations and presenting data visually

· Must have valid driver’s license

Compensation & Working Conditions

· Reports to BCNPHA Senior Program Delivery Manager, Asset Management

· Will work very closely with the following:

o Internal - Asset Management Department and all Association departments, and

o External – partners at Utilities, Clean BC, BC Housing, AHMA, and non-profit housing provider staff (administrators, property managers).
