THE DIOCESE OF EASTERN NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR Hospital Chaplaincy (Full-time)

Position Description

1. The Full Time Chaplain commits to the following:

-To work Sunday to Thursday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. primarily at the Health Sciences Centre, the Janeway (children’s hospital), and the Mental Health and Addictions Centre (expected opening in 2025) and other sites as necessity arises.

– To work Sunday to Thursday (every other week) on call pager only from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.

-Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays the first on call is the other Denominational Chaplains. The Anglican Chaplain is on second calls these nights and can be called for anointing.

– The Anglican Chaplains are on First call on Wednesday nights and are responsible for all faith communities except the Pentecostal. We only call the Roman Catholic if their patients need anointing.

– On Fridays and Saturdays responsible for Anglican Patients only.

2. The primary responsibilities of the Full Time Chaplain include:

– To provide pastoral care for emergencies, intensive care units, new admissions, patients and their families and to staff as requested.

-To provide notes (email) for the other Anglican Chaplains

– To communicate daily with the other Anglican Chaplain

– To advise Parish clergy of any admissions after seeking permission from the patient(s)

-To advise of any concerns or difficulties (Sunday to Thursday) to the First Call Chaplain

– To maintain relevant statistical records (workload measurement, baptisms, anointing and deaths)

-To work in collaboration with other denominational chaplains

-To be a support to the other denominational chaplains

-To cover for other denominational chaplains as appropriate unless previously agreed upon by both parties

– To work with the Pastoral Care Committee of the Mental Health and Addictions Centre (expected opening in 2025) to provide worship opportunities to various units in conjunction with other Pastoral Care Staff.

– To work with the Pastoral Care Committee of the Mental Health and Addictions Centre (expected opening in 2025) in leading in services of Holy Communion from the Chapel on site.

-To share cover for the other Anglican chaplain on vacation on a prearranged schedule.

– To inform the Bishop (or designate) of any concerns.

– To attend meetings of the site Pastoral Care Department and other meetings as requested.

– To attend Diocesan Meetings (Synod, Archdeaconry and others as set forth).

3. This ministry will report to the Coordinating Chaplain and will be under the immediate authority of the Diocesan Bishop (or designate).

4. Remuneration for this ministry will be at the Diocesan Pay Scale. A Housing Allowance is provided with this position.

5. Vacation – As per Diocesan Regulations.

6. Statutory Holidays, as per Diocesan Policy, with the expectation the Chaplain can respond to any page from Hospital Staff during the holiday.

7. Any variations to the above as this ministry evolves may be made by considered and mutual consent.
