Salary: $93,070 to $116,337 annually (To commensurate with experience and consistent with UHN compensation policy)

Position Summary

The responsibilities of the Technical Specialist, Business Systems include: driving the requirements elicitation, analysis and design of clinical and business requirements and providing technical leadership of internally developed systems and integration of external applications while ensuring software solutions meet or exceed stated quality and safety objectives; serving as a mentor to other business systems analysts on the team, providing direction on requirements elicitation and ensuring cohesiveness in solution design; leading continuous process improvement by conducting training sessions with the rest of the product management team; ensuring that team members follow departmental and hospital policies and procedures, as well as adhere to technical and regulatory standards; performing cross-functional and/or other duties consistent with the job classification, as assigned or requested.

The Technical Specialist, Business Systems is an essential member of the Product Management team collaborating with other business systems analysts, developers, quality analysts and providing support to various clinical and business applications identified for JDMI. The role closely collaborates with business stakeholders and subject matter experts to ensure high system performance and reliability; they gather and analyze information and specifications related to clinical practices, workflows, and business processes, and design technical system solutions. Documentation of policies and procedures to facilitate system usage and effective communication with end users and third-party vendors are also key aspects of the role.

Duties
  • Elicit and document business requirements, for purposes of scoping, prioritizing and design
  • Developing business and systems documentation throughout the software development life cycle
  • Facilitate the solution design process for prioritized enhancements
  • Provides end user and key stakeholder support for change management and adoption of systems
  • Coordination and facilitation of meetings, working groups, and organizational committees, and liaising with various technical and project teams
  • Communicates technical information to a non-technical audience and business information to a technical audience
  • Leading simple to moderately complex projects of medium to large scope involving various internal and external stakeholders
  • Assist in tracking and managing application defect and enhancement requests
  • Designs and executes test strategies, performing/coordinating various testing types (user acceptance, application, performance, regression, and integration) for new releases and changes.
  • Coordinate and participate in application upgrades and system implementation activities
  • Assist with monitoring of project plans, schedules, status reports and budgets as required
  • Assist with system workflow issues and guide the implementation of requested changes.
  • Resolve process and system issues with all levels of management to ensure efficient operation.
  • Communicate with external software vendors to maintain ongoing business and functional requirements.
  • Provide education and training to end-users and stakeholders as required and create training materials and other documents to enhance application support.
  • Contribute to the development and improvement of policies and procedures, and maintain technical and procedural documentation, including diagrams.
  • Document system problems and resolutions for future reference.
Qualifications
  • At minimum, completion of Undergraduate Degree required in Computer Science, Health Informatics or related field.
  • Over 6 years up to and including 8 years practical and related experience and/or 2 year on-job-training required
  • Project Management/Business Analysis
  • Strong stakeholder consultation experience interacting with stakeholders at various levels
  • Advanced skills using software tools such as Visio, Microsoft Project, Excel, Word and SharePoint and other tools as necessary.
  • Understanding of key IT concepts and components (e.g. networks, storage devices, OS, information retrieval, data warehousing, applications, firewalls etc.) and their inter-relationships.
  • Proven, in-depth analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to systematically analyze incidents/problems, identify root cause, draw logical conclusions and determine/recommend practical courses of action.
  • Must have knowledge of tools and techniques for anticipating, recognizing, and resolving technical problems.
  • Experience with clinical systems - e.g. clinical processes, nomenclature etc.
  • Experience with one or more clinical/business applications in a large healthcare organization required.
  • Experience in a health-care environment and strong understanding of the healthcare system and hospital sector preferred.
  • Previous project/systems implementation experience.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and follow-up skills.
  • The ability to probe for information about the underlying needs of the organization and user community, which directly influences how the system will be built.
  • The ability to communicate effectively with project leadership and subject matter experts.
  • Strong organizational, time management and critical thinking skills with the ability to effectively problem solve and prioritize in a high-pressure environment.
  • The ability and interest to learn and apply new technologies.
