Job Requirements / Description
Postdoctoral/Research Scientist Position in Ocular ImagingPhotoMedicine Labs, University of Waterloo, Ontario, CanadaSalary Range: $60K - $110K (based on qualifications and experience)Employer DescriptionThe University of Waterloo:The University of Waterloo is home to one of the top 50 engineering schools globally and the largest in Canada. For 28 consecutive years, it has been ranked Canada's most innovative university, and it holds top spots for career preparation, hands-on learning, and comprehensive research. With a vibrant community of over 50,000 students, Waterloo is known for its innovation, top-tier education, and a thriving research environment. Notably, Professor Donna Strickland from Waterloo received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2018. The region is an excellent place to study, research, and live. For more information: Postdoctoral Affairs at UWPhotoMedicine Labs (PML):At PhotoMedicine Labs, we specialize in designing cutting-edge optical systems for clinical and pre-clinical biomedical applications, enabling clinicians and researchers to access novel insights and capabilities. Since 2019, PML has secured over $10M in funding. Our interdisciplinary research bridges the gap between bench and bedside to improve global healthcare. We develop all hardware and software in-house, covering optical imaging, photon absorption, fiber optics, AI, and more. Our facilities include labs dedicated to discovery, imaging, machine learning, pre-clinical research, and pathology.Position OverviewWe are seeking a highly motivated research scientist or postdoctoral fellow to join our 2024 CIHR-funded project. The project focuses on developing a novel application of Photon Absorption Remote Sensing (PARS®) for detailed functional and structural imaging of the eye. The primary goal is to enhance the safety, repeatability, and contrast of in-vivo PARS imaging systems while accurately measuring key functional parameters such as blood oxygenation and the metabolic rate of oxygen consumption. These parameters are critical for diagnosing and managing ocular diseases, with the potential to revolutionize ophthalmic diagnostics through non-contact, label-free PARS functional imaging. For more information, visit: PhotoMedicine LabsProject Details & MotivationEarly detection of the leading causes of blindness could allow for timely interventions before clinical symptoms manifest. However, no current technology can accurately screen for these pre-clinical stages. PARS technology provides a real-time, non-contact, label-free approach to visualizing retinal vasculature and measuring retinal blood oxygen saturation (rSO2) in vivo. This innovation has the potential to create the first accurate retinal oximeter, allowing for pre-symptomatic detection and deeper understanding of retinal disease pathophysiology.Roles & ResponsibilitiesConduct independent research in optical imaging system design, including OCT, confocal, and PARS microscopes.Collaborate weekly with international ophthalmology teams to design experiments and analyze results.Design, build, and test complex optical systems for clinical and pre-clinical applications.Lead the development of imaging technologies for real-time, non-invasive monitoring of ocular conditions.Collect and interpret data from clinical and pre-clinical studies.Contribute to the preparation of manuscripts, presentations, and grant applications.Mentor junior researchers and contribute to the training of graduate students in optical system design and data analysis.Job RequirementsPhD in Engineering, Physics, Optics, or Optical Engineering. Background in ocular imaging and experience with in vivo imaging techniques is a MUST.Strong hands-on experience in optical system design and development.Proven expertise in optical engineering theory, principles, and practice.Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to refine experimental protocols.Clear communication of complex design concepts to interdisciplinary teams, including those in biological sciences.Strong track record of scientific publications in high-impact journals.Excellent verbal and written communication skills.Preferred ExperienceExpertise in advanced image processing techniques and software.Experience in animal imaging and familiarity with eye safety protocols.Experience in leading collaborative research projects with interdisciplinary teams.**Please note: Only candidates who are successful in the application process and invited for an interview will be contacted by us via email. **
