Works collaboratively with program directors and managers to ensure that the general ledger is kept up to date by incorporating new and revised programs. Ensures that balance sheet accounts are balanced on a regular basis and that operating statement accounts are periodically reviewed for reasonability in relation to internal schedules. Develops schedules, reconciliations, and stays up to date with complex accounting requirements in the NPO sector, for a multi-sector business. Issues financial reports to program directors and managers on a monthly basis. Prepares financial reports for the board of directors for review by the VP, Finance and CFO. Assists finance leadership with the preparation of financial reporting to funders and donors. Ensures that sub-ledgers are congruent with general ledger balances, where applicable. Prepares monthly and year-end accruals as required. Maintains capital asset records. Manages the back end of the payroll process by preparing payroll journal entries and preparing group insurance journal entries. Assists the VP Finance with the preparation of draft year-end financial statements and working papers for the auditors. Collaborates and works effectively with the rest of the Finance team and its functions (AP, FP&A, Payroll) Manages the relationship with the auditors’ field staff and serves as the auditors’ first point of contact on transactional matters. Acts as a cheque signing officer and as an internet banking payments officer. Provides training and orientation sessions for new managers to help them interpret financial reports and use the company’s accounts payable system. Assists the VP, Finance with the design and implementation of financial management policies, procedures, and systems. This position also provides oversight to the finance staff in the absence of the VP, Finance and CFO. Responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of any information related to the organization, units, programs, staff, and clients, which the duties of the position provide access to. Engages/attends in training seminars, conferences, and trade shows to upgrade skills as directed to fulfill the responsibilities of the position. Ensures that anti-racism objectives and community development principles of the organization are achieved. Participates in regular supervisory sessions, staff and unit meetings. Carries out additional duties as identified from time to time by the VP of Finance. About You CPA/CA, CPA/CMA or CPA/CGA designation. Four years of experience in financial accounting including general ledger, payroll, accounts payable, and financial statement preparation. Excellent spreadsheet and word processing skills. Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment. Experience in the not-for-profit sector is an asset. Knowledge of Great Plains accounting software an asset.
