Description:
The Assistant Chief Engineer is responsible for planning and managing the operation and maintenance of a campus installation registered under the TSSA for the Chief Engineer. Responsibilities include managing and directing the work of building shift operating engineers, internal tradespeople, and external contractors. The Assistant Chief Engineer responds to operational issues raised by faculty, students, and staff, and ensures the completion of repairs, upgrades, and renovations with as little disruption as possible to academic programs. This role ensures that the operation and maintenance of mechanical equipment and systems, including heating, cooling, compressed air, and hot and cold water supply systems, is carried out in a safe and continuous manner. The Assistant Chief Engineer provides expert technical advice to others, maintains deficiency lists, actively pursues energy conservation opportunities, and manages the section budget.
Qualification:
EDUCATION: 1st Class or 2nd Class* Operating Engineer license (* see Experience Section). Knowledge of all types of equipment related to refrigeration, heating systems, air handling, and A/C systems and their controls, at a level appropriate in order to direct and instruct subordinate engineers in operations and maintenance.
EXPERIENCE: Minimum seven (7) years’ related experience, including two (2) years’ supervisory experience or combination of education and experience.
SKILLS:
Ability to handle operation and maintenance equipment.
Proficiency in the use of standard office software applications: Word, Excel, etc.
Knowledge of Bailey boiler controls / Co-Generation gas Turbines.
OTHER: Excellent organizational skills; good oral and written communication skills; demonstrated effective managerial skills, including skill in training and motivating staff; demonstrated ability to provide a high level of service under pressure of multiple demands; good analytical and problem-solving skills; good interpersonal skills; ability to exercise good judgment and initiative.
