Job Requirements / Description

Reporting to the Technical Engineering Manager, the Lead Engineer – Systems will be responsible for the design, development and implementation of all systems installations on R&C catamarans. This will include installations on new projects as well as improvements and engineering changes on existing models (ECR’s). The Lead Engineer - systems will be responsible for managing the Systems Engineering team to achieve all required deliverables and all day-to-day requirements.

KEY JOB FUNCTIONS:

Engineering and Design

  • Design and check all Systems to meet the manufacturers guidelines, functional requirements and certification standards, ensuring suitability for manufacture, serviceability and that designs are within cost parameters and that there is collaboration of designs with other design areas/teams.
  • Create CAD Models (2D & 3D) & complete calculations for the design and specification of systems components and equipment for new product design.
  • Determine build sequence and “design intent” for respective systems.
  • Ensure completeness of specifications issued to production for Systems detailing.
  • Investigate and implement new products or technologies to improve quality & processes or reduce manufacturing costs.
  • Prepare and ensure the BOM is always correct and updated.
  • Ensure critical quality checks are completed during new part prototyping or ECR implementation, for all Systems designs.
  • Specify new equipment based on requirements.
  • Conduct trials and tests for new equipment and determine feasibility for implementation.

People Managment

  • Ensure deliverables are met according to project deadlines.
  • Prepare and manage all trackers, including but not limited to new model Systems milestone tracker.
  • Prioritise, balance & define workloads of team members.
  • Manage performance, guide, lead and mentor team members.
  • Create and implement annual training plans for the respective team, in consultation with department manager.
  • Define new processes or improve existing processes to improve efficiency.
  • Manage attendance related aspects including late coming, absenteeism, sick leave etc.
  • Conduct interviews for all new staff within the respective department team.
  • Manage all disciplinary issues within the department and liaise with the HR department.

Administration

  • Manage the Engineering Change Request (ECR) system for all ECR’s relating to all Systems. This includes but is not limited to assigning project leads, approving completion of ECR projects, monitoring and expediting ECR projects.
  • Approve all technical documents (Drawings, SOPs, BCRs TBs) relating to all Systems.

Stakeholder Support

  • Support Production (Moulding shop, Assembly lines & Joinery shop) onsite during Prototyping & ECR implementation, by providing explanations on both design intent and new processes, emphasising critical design aspects and assistance with finding and understanding required documentation before the new design is implemented.
  • Support the Manufacturing Engineers, Quality Engineers and Process Engineers, by providing technical input and clarity on the design intent, as required.
  • Support the Logistics & Stores Departments with BOM queries, workstation allocation, general explanation of part usage and explanations on expected part or material usage on new products whenever a risk of shortfalls or obsolescence may exist.
  • Support Warranty by providing technical feedback relating to warranty claims.
  • Support Commissioning by answering any technical or BOM related queries and performing quality checks during the implementation of new products or engineering changes.
  • Support Technical Purchasing by answering any technical queries related to TQR’s or advising on stock code redundancy.
  • Support Project Management by providing constant feedback on the status of work for new projects. This includes, but is not limited to drawings, CNC files, BOM packs, and quality checks

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum: National Degree (NQF Level 6) Engineering or related field (Boat/Yacht/Ship Building), preferably Mechanical, Mechatronics or Electrical.
  • Ideal: BTech/BSc/B.Eng. degree (NQF Level 7/8) Engineering or related field (Boat/Yacht/Ship Building).
  • Experience: 5-10 years design experience in Boat/Yach/Ship building. Management of a team. Working on Solidworks CAD and Solidworks PDM advantageous.
  • Thorough understanding of design for manufacturing and build sequence.

  • An interest in boating and boat building is advantageous to this role as the position will include practical product development, sea trials, and facilitating manufacturing.
  • Sailing experience will be advantageous.
  • Experience with Syspro will be advantageous
