Schneider Electric is excited to offer an opportunity to join the Hedgehogs team in Victoria, BC Canada. The Hedgehogs are a multi-disciplinary scrum team that designs, builds, and supports the best power metering products in the world. As a member of the Hedgehogs, you would join a collaborative, energetic, and passionate team with global reach. What will you do?
As a Hedgehogs team member, your work is planned in 4-week sprints in alignment with business needs and in collaboration with team members, Scrum Master, and Product Owner. Your sprint commitment will be maintained at a sustainable level, supported by your Scrum Master. The prime objective of Hedgehogs is to deliver business value. We achieve this end goal by maintaining existing products and releasing new ones. As a member of the team, you contribute with your areas of competency in addition to learning new skills.
The desired areas of competency are not prescriptive, however the list below could help to understand the scope of the role:

  1. The manufacturing plant is unable to buy a certain mechanical component (metalwork, plastics, label, fastener, connector, cable assembly, plating/coating, etc).
  2. This has been escalated from manufacturing through to engineering.
  3. Find or design equivalent components.
  4. Physical testing peer review a design or technical approach engineering drawings / documentation and product BOM updates discuss release plan an interest or familiarity with electronic components managing part requests through company process.

Additionally, opportunities will arise in alignment with your expertise or areas of interest. During the sprint planning ceremony, you can ask to take these opportunities in the capacity that helps the team. The Hedgehogs team supports a broad range of products, so the future of our backlog is often difficult to predict. What is certain: the backlog will evolve to the needs of the business. New and exciting challenges surface often, so we value team members willing to take on a wide array of challenges.

Potential scope items:
Assemble and commission the mechanics of a test fixture that emulates a test fixture in production. This will be used by the Engineering department as a means to test before production release, increasing the chance of success and enabling iterative development.
Design and build the mechanics of a circuit board tester that will be used by the Hedgehogs during product development and support. The design will include elements of 3D modelling, 3D printing, custom metalwork, assembly, wiring, using a thermal camera, testing, and commissioning.
Design and fabricate various fixtures, brackets, enclosures, for use in the Engineering lab, Production Plant, or in the Office.
Assist a mechanical engineer on project work using PTC Creo related to injection molded plastics, metalwork, cable assemblies, drawing creation, etc.
Design and build the mechanics of a button cycle life tester that will be used by the Hedgehogs during product testing. The design will include elements of 3D modelling, 3D printing, pneumatics, assembly, wiring, control system, testing, and commissioning.

What qualifications will make you successful for this role?
Currently pursuing a bachelor's degree, preferably in third or fourth year, in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related technical discipline. Strong collaboration skills to engage a variety of stakeholders, including other mechanical engineers. Nice to have: Experience in finding or designing equivalent mechanical components and familiarity with electronic components. Proficiency in engineering drawings, documentation, and product BOM updates. Capability to assemble and commission test fixtures and circuit board testers, including design and fabrication using various tools and techniques.
