Bioinformatics Core Manager/Platform Lead

The opportunity:
Genomics and bioinformatics are rapidly evolving into a multi-billion research enterprise and industry. We are looking for a talented individual to join the Statistical Genomics and Bioinformatics Core Platform (SGB) at the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences and the Max Rady College of Medicine. The successful candidate will assume the position of the manager of this core platform. The primary objective of this platform is to build a bioinformatics and statistical genomics service infrastructure for applied omics research through 1) integrating internal and external bioinformatics and genomics resources and expertise, 2) providing bioinformatics and statistical genomics support and training, 3) providing bioinformatics service for the analysis of data on a fee for service basis.
The candidate will be joining a vibrant community of bioinformaticians and omics scientists and a supportive environment through sharing of common analysis pipelines, training experiences, and dry lab resources. In addition, substantial professional development opportunities will be provided through provincial wide bioinformatics networks in which the platform participates.
We are looking for a talented individual who will:
Assume leadership role in the core as manager of the core facility.
Contribute to a wide range of bioinformatics research projects on genomics, transcriptomics and epitranscriptomics.
Contribute to the development of innovative bioinformatics approaches and tools for the analysis of omic data.
Work closely with other team members aiming for high-quality research.
The successful applicant will be responsible to:
Meet researchers to discuss and understand their projects requested for consultation.
Perform study design and sample size calculation, and assist researchers in grant proposal writing.
Perform quality control of raw omic data, data management, build customized analysis pipelines, perform data analysis, result interpretation, and write summary of data analysis.
Perform bioinformatics analysis for approved projects on a fee for service basis.
Coordinate, prepare, and offer bioinformatics workshops on selected topics to basic and clinical researchers.
Maintain an intake service list of research projects.
Oversee the installation of software to computers and the management of the core’s HPC resources.
Curate and manage the platform’s information website.
The qualifications and experience we’re looking for:
Your Profile
PhD in Bioinformatics/Computational Biology is preferred but exceptional candidates with an MSc and significant professional experience will also be considered.
Graduates of life sciences degrees with substantial computational expertise and coding experience in R and Python are also encouraged to apply.
Experience with genomics, transcriptomics data and/or Oxford Nanopore Technologies sequencing data is an asset.
An interest in state-of-the-art genomic technologies.
Autonomous, dynamic and curious.
Advanced knowledge of Python and R.
