The Opportunity Reporting to the Director - Strategy & Engagement, you will be responsible for the strategic management and daily operation of the Community Safety & Well-Being section. The primary focus of this role will oversee the successful implementation of the provincially mandated Community Safety & Well-Being Plan and will provide leadership support to the Specialists implementing the Thunder Bay Drug Strategy and Net-Zero Strategy. This is an exciting opportunity to join a busy municipality where you will lead a team and work in collaboration with other community partners to deliver the Corporation's objectives and impact the community. Some of the accountabilities for this role are: Establish and maintain working relationships with diverse local community groups, agencies and boards, other orders of government and individuals to meet the objectives of the Community Safety & Well-Being Plan; and coordinate resources to develop innovative programs, policies, and services to improve health and well-being in the City. Provide leadership and participate in a cross-corporate Strategies Network to cultivate opportunities for joint planning and decision making between members and other organizations which have a stake in addressing the social, environmental, and community determinants of well-being, and advancing the community and corporate strategies. Establish and maintain strategic and collaborative relationships across the Corporation, and with external stakeholders, to support strategic policy development. Prepare information, reports, letters, and memoranda to the Director, City Manager, Mayor and Members of Council. Attend Council/Committee meetings, public hearings, community, and other public meetings as required; make presentations and provides recommendations on matters pertaining to the Section. Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate will have: Degree in a political, social science or humanities field, or similar related field, together with five years of progressively responsible management experience; or Diploma in a political, social science or humanities field, or similar related field, together with seven years of progressively responsible management experience. In-depth knowledge and understanding of root causes of crime and addiction, social determinants of health, resilience and capacity building for community safety, public health approaches to substance use, and upstream prevention. In-depth knowledge of social issues relating to poverty, homelessness, substance use, mental health, structural racism, health inequity, oppression, and marginalization. Demonstrated experience working with persons with lived and living experience, municipal emergency services, public health organizations and community agencies focusing on positive social change. Superior ability to display sensitivity and commitment to human rights and equity issues. Proven conflict management abilities and mediation skills.
