We Have a Big Name – and a Big Mission
We’re the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety. But you can call us CCOHS. We’re a federal government corporation that’s focused on a single mission: we believe everyone in Canada has the right to a healthy and safe workplace where they can thrive. Our tools and resources are designed to give employers and workers across the country the information they need to stay healthy and safe, both physically and mentally, on the job.
We need rock solid information technology infrastructure and platforms to get this important information into the hands of users. Without this in place, we wouldn’t be able to deliver the many courses, fact sheets, databases, podcasts, guides, and other tools that workplaces across Canada need.
And that’s where you come in. You will play a role in ensuring the reliability of assigned web-based applications used to support CCOHS products and services. You’ll be part of our IT Digital Innovation and Development team to help make these plans a reality.
If you’re excited about making a difference and being part of a culture that values innovation, professional growth, and your overall well-being, we definitely want you to read on.
About the Role
As a Web Developer, you will program and maintain web-based applications for the delivery of a variety of CCOHS products. You’ll build applications and use database technology to generate dynamic web pages and develop programs to convert data in various formats for consistent and flexible web-based delivery.
Reporting to the Manager, IT Digital Innovation and Development, you’ll make programming changes as necessary to our websites to ensure optimal operation and continuous improvement. You understand the importance of high service quality and will test these changes on a variety of different systems and web browsers to ensure proper functionality.
As a member of the IT Digital Innovation and Development team, you know how to work collaboratively with other IT professionals to provide outstanding information technology support for clients.
What You Have
A university degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or Mathematics, or a college diploma with concentration in computer technology or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Four years experience with web development in an environment using PHP (7 or above), HTML, JavaScript, CSS, XML, Linux and MySQL database. Also beneficial is experience with Node.js or Python.
Excellent work experience with popular web development tools or frameworks, including Laravel and Vue.js. Good understanding of unit testing or automated testing in PHP programming. Proficiency with using and developing web services such as SOAP or RESTful APIs.
Comfortable using command lines or tools in Unix/Linux operating systems, especially in a containerized environment and working with source code version control systems such as Git. Work experience with Windows operating system.
Over 3 years experience with relational DBMS such as MySQL or SQL Server, and hands-on experience in writing SQL scripts in database as well as programming.
Who You Are
A supportive, respectful team member who provides guidance, treats others equitably, and thrives in an environment where new ideas and collaboration are encouraged.
An IT professional with an understanding of user requirements, and the ability to translate these into usable solutions.
An excellent communicator who connects well with stakeholders and clients.
A lifelong learner of leading IT best practices and trends, particularly with respect to WWW development, and integrates this into daily work.
