The opportunity:

Reporting to the Executive Vice-President, Chief Operating Officer & Chief Financial Officer, the Vice-President, Investments & Lead Portfolio Manager will be responsible for strategic input and oversight of the activities on the Wellington-Altus Managed Accounts Platforms.

The Vice-President, Investments & Lead Portfolio Manager will work at the direction of the President to promote program growth, economic/margin maximization, efficiency, and advisor adoption of the Advisor Lead (Advice + Managed), UMA (Private Platinum Portfolios) and SMA (Crescent) programs and the implementation of existing and new product solutions. The incumbent will also act as the Designated Managed Account Supervisor, responsible for all Managed Accounts.

Key responsibilities include:

WAPW Platform

  • Collaborating closely with the Executive Committee, Senior Management Team and cross-functionally to align operational goals with overall company objectives.
  • Delivering, implementing, and monitoring strategy, policy and key performance indicators for the discretionary managed channel, including; pricing, advisor recruitment/transition, and managed channel/program development and management.
  • Working with the President and portfolio management staff to position and promote the UMA & SMA program for relevant segments of IAs, APM/PM portfolios.
  • Building strong partnerships with service providers and partners, ensuring accountability, efficiency and to support an exceptional IA and client experience.
  • Providing ongoing support regarding recruitment & transition of new advisors to the WAPW platform.

Platform Implementation

  • Developing and delivering guidance on the use of internally managed programs and third-party solutions and achieving a harmonized balance between practice efficiency and optimizing client outcomes.
  • Providing ongoing support, training, and development opportunities for IAs, APM/PMs offering guidance on best practices in support of growth and efficiency.
  • Investment practice management, advisor support and advice delivery across Wellington-Altus’ discretionary Portfolio Management channel.
  • Assessing, recommending and approving new APM and PM regulatory applications.
  • Developing and writing licensing submissions.
  • Maintaining day to day oversight of the UMA & SMA platform and coordinate with Independent Advisor Solutions (IAS) with respect to decisions on allocation, re-balancing, implementation, manager selection and monitoring.
  • Liaising with IAS with respect to portfolio positioning, strategic/tactical decisions and trade rationale.
  • Supporting distribution of manager commentaries and investment strategy communications for the UMA and SMA platforms to advisors.

Platform Oversight

  • Oversight and direct supervision of discretionary PM’s including coaching and mentoring new Portfolio Managers.
  • Ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, industry standards and internal policies related to securities.
  • Oversight of analysts supporting a range of activities including new product due diligence, security risk ratings, and portfolio management committees.

General

  • Serving as a liaison between internal departments to support program marketing, training and advisor support for all programs and platforms within WAPW, including assisting in the development of materials, presentations & tools.
  • Supporting the department and President in projects, initiatives, and activities established as a priority for the business and in further of asset growth, vertical integration and margin enhancement goals.
  • Serving as a central point of contact for advisor communications and inquiries for WAPW’s programs.
  • Supporting executive management in forecasting and budgeting activities for the WAPW program and platform suite.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or advanced degree in finance, business administration, economics or related field of study.
  • 10+ years securities industry experience with at least 7+ leadership experience
  • 5+ years of Supervisory and Portfolio Management Experience
  • Direct field experience dealing with Investment Advisors and Portfolio Managers.
  • Thorough understanding of Securities Industry products, capital markets, financial instruments, and investment strategies.
  • Deep working knowledge of “best practices” in the financial services industry, with particular focus on portfolio management.
  • Completion of applicable securities industry courses offered by the Canadian Securities Institute including Canadian Securities Course, and the Conducts and Practices Handbook Course.
  • Successful completion of the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) program and/or Chartered Investment Manager (CIM) designation.
  • Current licensing as a Registered Representative (RR) with CIRO under the Portfolio Manager category or as an Advising Representative (AR) under the Portfolio Manager category.
  • Knowledge and proficiency with portfolio management and risk modelling systems such as; Morningstar Direct, Bloomberg, FactSet, etc.
  • Proficiency with the MSOffice suite, including Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Teams, and Outlook.
  • Demonstrated high level of accountability, reliability, adaptability, and innovation in accomplishing day to day work and long-term goals.
  • Ability to develop and communicate on complex financial products/strategies.
  • High attention to detail with the ability to handle multiple priorities at the same time.
  • Exemplary interpersonal and influencing skills; an ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively, across multiple mediums (in-person, over the phone, and virtually).
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • High tolerance for ambiguity; highly adaptive and able to manage a large volume of competing priorities.
  • Effective critical thinking and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong work ethic and aim to succeed, demonstrate a high level of professionalism at all times.

Conditions of employment:

  • Must be legally eligible to work in Canada.
  • Must be able to travel withhin Canada 10-15% of the time.
  • Must possess current licensing as a Registered Representative (RR) with CIRO under the Portfolio Manager category or as an Advising Representative (AR) under the Portfolio Manager category.
