Reporting to the Provincial Medical Executive Director, the Department Heads for Family Medicine are jointly responsible for the operations of the Family Medicine Medical staff in the Zone, providing strategic and operational planning and service leadership in collaboration with relevant administrative Department leaders. The DHs provide leadership to the FM network leads, as well as performance management and physician resource planning for members of the department.

Role Accountabilities

1. Ensure compliance with NSHA Bylaws and Rules and Regulations, including signing off on credentials, managing complex applications, and addressing CPSNS restrictions.
2. Hold regular department meetings and provide meeting minutes to the Provincial Medical Executive Director.
3. Attend and actively participate in relevant committee meetings such as ZMAC, Clinical Affairs, Zone Council, Network Council, and LTC MAC meetings.
4. Provide co-leadership for strategic and operational planning and budgeting, collaborating with Health Services Managers and Leads.
5. Ensure service continuity through effective scheduling practices, including vacation requests, on-call scheduling, and locum utilization.
6. Monitor standards, quality, and resource utilization within the department.
7. Provide performance management for all department members.
8. Manage complaints and disciplinary actions for department members.
9. Support the medical education mandate by recruiting physicians for teaching roles, serving on the Dal Medical School Committee, and coordinating medical residents and students.
10. Participate in clinical services planning and support the management of various clinics within the zone, advocating for the healthcare system and serving as a bridge between Acute Care and Community Care.
11. Lead recruitment and retention efforts, including identifying opportunities, managing recruitment processes, handling retirement transitions, and addressing the needs of new recruits.
12. Ensure the completion of new hire and onboarding processes, with support from the Specialty Site Lead as required.
13. Organize regular IMMR for the Department in collaboration with Organization Performance.
14. Support and implement the Primary Care Strategy, focusing on transformation, modernization, and addressing physician issues within the zone.
15. Participate in leadership development initiatives.
16. Perform all duties with an understanding and lens of EDIRA (Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Reconciliation, and Accessibility) principles.

? MD licensed in Nova Scotia and privileged with Nova Scotia Health.
? Evidence of past and ongoing leadership training.

Compensation

Each position is 0.5 FTE and individual compensation will be set based on previous experience.
