International Student Development (ISD) provides a wide range of programming and services supporting the full participation/integration of international students in all aspects of university life throughout their time at UBC. The Director, ISD is responsible for strategic and operational leadership including the planning, development, implementation, evaluation, improvement, and management of overall international student services provided by the International Student Development Unit at the Vancouver Campus, to ensure alignment with institutional goals, strategic plans, and the mission, vision, and values of the portfolio and UBC. The Director oversees the administrative leadership of the ISD unit and collaborates with other leaders in Student Affairs (SA) on strategic planning and implementation of the overall vision and goals of the Student Strategic Plan. The Director enacts a commitment to anti-racism, equity, diversity, inclusion, and decolonized practice through continued service level development, innovations, and improvement. The Director will ensure current knowledge of trends, research, and best practices supporting international students in post-secondary education. The Director will pursue research opportunities with practitioners and the academic community to further practice for service and program deliverability. Work Performed Provides overall leadership and strategic direction to develop the departmental vision, goals, priorities, objectives, policies, and procedures as well as integrated SA plans. Develops a strategic plan to support unit goals and to build and sustain a collaborative, respectful, and effective team. Integrates the units of the ISD department and develops strong working relationships between staff for effective delivery of integrated programming across students’ time at UBC. Provides evidence-based leadership in the innovative design and delivery of ISD services and programs, addressing the changing needs and diversity of the campus, ensuring alignment and integration with overall SA programs and services for international students. Evaluates trends and recommends, advocates, develops, and initiates responsive and proactive changes within the department, and evaluates and improves programs and services. Ensures that services are provided in ways that are sensitive and responsive to the broad range of diversity within the international student population including, but not limited to, gender, race, culture, ability, and sexual orientation. Leads the strategic introduction and development of new programs and procedures supporting the full engagement of international students, the mandate of the unit, and the mission of the University, via participation on and chairing committees as requested, addressing unit or institutional policy issues; contributing experience, written reports, proposals, or briefings, and participating in deliberations and decisions regarding forwarding such policy papers to the Managing Director – Student Affairs, VP Students, or to the President, Senate, and/or Board as requested. Monitors problem areas within the department and initiates or delegates the initiation of remedial interventions at a personal-individual or organizational-system level. Develops, implements, and manages risk assessment and mitigation, and leads the development of Emergency Response Protocols. Leads and facilitates the development of partnerships with Admissions and Recruiting, the International Student Initiative, Faculties and academic advising offices, as well as the Equity and Inclusion Office, the First Nations House of Learning, and other key programs across UBC, to support a common experience for international students wherever possible. Provides leadership to the ISD Team, including recruitment, hiring, performance management, and structural planning and optimization in partnership with ISD managers. Overall responsibility for directly or indirectly managing over 20 staff in 3 or more spaces on campus. Ensures that the ISD vision is linked to daily operations through effective leadership. Oversees the development and implementation of marketing strategies to increase awareness of the range of services and programs available, articulating the vision and approach of the ISD to diverse audiences. Attends professional development conferences and workshops, and keeps abreast of knowledge related to best practices and trends in student engagement and promoting a sense of belonging and their implications for SA overall and its intersection with relevant issues. Provides staff with information regarding current trends and issues within the community of practice. Participates in relevant professional associations including the Canadian Bureau of International Education (CBIE) and the Canadian Association of College and University Student Services (CACUSS).
