The Commodity Tax Analyst will be responsible to provide expert commodity tax (GST/HST/PST and QST) advice as a subject matter expert (“SME”) to Loblaws Inc. and Shoppers Drug Mart Inc. (“Loblaw”) business units across several legal entities.

Key Responsibilities /Job Duties:
  • Research Federal and Provincial legislation and regulations to assign the correct taxability (“tax flags”) to goods and services that are sold in the retail store network in the food and drug industry
  • Represent Loblaw to government taxing authorities who audit for compliance to legislation and regulations in a support role as appropriate and assigned
  • Assist in providing SME commodity tax advice and/or recommendations to management for all business units to be compliant with legislation and regulations to ensure Loblaw remains compliant from a commodity tax perspective.
  • Assist external and internal stakeholders with resolving commodity tax issues on an on-going basis across all business units including, but not limited to, vendor contracts and agreements, invoice processing etc.
  • Assist with the review and development of new/enhanced commodity tax reporting systems, policies, procedures and controls to meet user requirements, changing circumstances and contribute to operational efficiencies and automations.
  • Liaises with business analysts and system programmers in the design and implementation of information systems that will support Loblaw commodity tax compliance efforts.
  • Participate in education, training sessions for various business unit stakeholders throughout the Enterprise
  • Develop strong cross-functional partnerships and relationships to support key strategic initiatives, as needed
  • Assist with ad-hoc and cross-functional projects and initiatives, as required
Qualifications and Competencies

A Post-Secondary education in Finance or related field is required; experience working in a fast-paced environment, particularly corporate and/or retail with sales tax experience will be considered an asset

The preferred candidate will also have:
  • Minimum of 2 years' commercial experience in a professional environment
  • Equivalent to a University degree in Business/Accounting and/or advanced standing toward an accounting designation (CPA or equivalent)
  • Understanding of commodity tax principles and rules and accounting principles as they relate to commodity tax
  • Strong computer skills including MS Office and knowledge of the operations and controls of the financial systems (SAP, Legacy, IBM Mainframe) and the ability to procure and report the information from these systems
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills including presentations and negotiating with auditors to assist senior management in reaching settlements
  • Must be current and aware of new commodity tax developments, changes in commodity tax legislation and interpretations and apply the impact to various business units within Loblaw
  • High degree of flexibility and creativity required to be able to adapt to a constantly changing environment and to develop and adapt financial procedures to meet such changes.
  • Ability to travel, overnight, on occasion, as needed
