Job Summary:

Under the general direction of the Manager—Patient and Family Support Services, the Child Life Specialist is responsible for providing support to oncology pediatric patients seen at CCMB. Responsibilities include facilitating coping with healthcare experiences, supporting continued growth and development of the child while undergoing treatment through group and individual programming, providing psychological preparation for medical procedures and treatments, providing education about cancer and its treatment in age-appropriate language, advocating for children/families’ psychosocial needs, and educating multidisciplinary team members about the developmental and emotional impact of cancer and stress on children.

Qualifications:

Education

  • Bachelor’s level degree or entry-to-practice academic credential in a related field with coursework in Child Life, Child Psychology, Child/Adolescent Development, Child and Family Social Sciences, or Education

Experience

  • Previous Child Life experience working in a healthcare setting is required. Two to three years of experience is preferred.
  • Previous Child Life experience working in oncology is an asset
  • Experience working with equity-denied populations is an asset
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered

Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent interpersonal skills are required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.
  • Basic computer skills required.
  • Strong understanding of healthcare equity and social determinants of health

Required Licenses, Registrations, Designations

  • Certified Child Life Specialist required or must be eligible for certification with Child Life Council.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

  • Physical demands may include crouching, stretching, kneeling and lifting and holding children as well as pushing and pulling wheelchairs and beds.
  • May be required to hold a valid Manitoba driver’s license and have access to a reliable vehicle.
  • Must be able to work with children from infants to teens.
  • Available to work occasional evenings and weekends

Other

  • Must have satisfactory employment record
  • Must be legally able to work in Canada
  • Ability to speak French in considered an asset
