Position Overview

The Zebra Child & Youth Advocacy Centre is seeking a passionate and highly engaged full-time Volunteer Program Coordinator to oversee our unique and comprehensive Volunteer Program. Reporting to the Director, Engagement & Development, the Volunteer Program Coordinator performs a variety of duties including recruitment, training, program planning and implementation as well as ensuring volunteers are engaged, supported and acknowledged.

This position is based in the Zebra Centre, located in downtown Edmonton (note: we will be moving this summer to 14325 112 Ave NW). It is a flexible, full-time schedule working 36.25 hours per week, Monday – Friday, with some evening and weekends as needed. Please note we work with accredited facility dogs on-site.

Responsibilities & Duties

Volunteer Program Development

  • Develops and implements goals and strategies to maintain, enhance and expand the Volunteer Program, including recruitment, training, onboarding, recognition, communications, and problem-solving.
  • Promotes the Volunteer Program internally and externally to attract talent and gain partner and community support of the program and the organization.
  • Maintains an inclusive and unbiased recruitment, screening, placement, orientation and training process.
  • Reviews and adjusts standardized training on a regular basis in collaboration with subject matter experts.
  • Develops and implements formal and informal volunteer recognition activities.
  • Responsible for all volunteer data within the Better Impact database and manages reporting requirements.
  • Conducts ongoing evaluation of the programs and services delivered by volunteers and implements improvements as necessary.
  • Develops, maintains, and ensures adherence to volunteer policies and procedures to maintain best practices.
  • Plans new training opportunities for volunteers to ensure they have the tools and knowledge to succeed in the position.
  • Maintains and grows an effective and viable volunteer service base to meet Centre’s objectives.

Volunteer Management & Communication

  • Responsible for the daily ongoing supervision of Zebra Centre volunteers.
  • Maintains regular and ongoing communications with prospective and current volunteers, keeping them informed and engaged.
  • Handles performance management and annual reviews of volunteers.
  • Assists with volunteer coordination for special events and fundraising initiatives.

Collaboration & Relationship-Building

  • Collaborates with partners and staff to identify, fill, and sustain various volunteer opportunities to enrich the overall operations of the Zebra Centre.
  • Supports partners and staff in onboarding new volunteers and understanding their role in supervising and supporting volunteers during shifts.
  • Builds relationships with external volunteer agencies to increase their awareness of the Zebra Centre and recruit new volunteers.

Qualifications

The successful Volunteer Program Coordinator will possess the following skills and experiences:

  • Related diploma or degree plus minimum two years of relevant experience or at least four years of equivalent experience managing and supervising volunteers/employees.
  • Experience in recruiting, training, and supporting volunteers to enhance programs and services within a non-profit organization.
  • Strong computer literacy and experience with volunteer databases.
  • Superior customer service & relationship management skills—a people-person!
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with experience and confidence in speaking publicly to various audiences.
  • A self-starter who is curious and willing to accept direction and feedback.
  • Ability to work independently with strong time-management and organizational skills.
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and handling sensitive information.
  • Flexibility and adaptability; enjoys working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Confident decision-maker who seeks out new opportunities and takes responsible risks.
  • Personal volunteer or victim services/advocacy experience is an asset.
  • Successful passing and maintenance of an Edmonton Police Service Enhanced Security Clearance and a Child Intervention Record Check.

Compensation and Benefits

This specialized position offers a competitive not-for-profit salary in the range of $52,000 – $57,000. In addition to a comprehensive health, dental, and life benefits package, the Zebra Child & Youth Advocacy Centre offers an employee RRSP program, underground heated parking, three weeks’ annual vacation and two additional mental wellness days per year. Communication tools (cellular telephone, iPad and other tools) provided as required. Compensation commensurate with experience.
