Director of Development – Maryvale Academy

Maryvale Academy of Ottawa is seeking a full-time Director of Development. Embracing the Mission and
Objectives of Maryvale Academy ( https://www.maryvaleacademy.ca/discover-us/ ), the successful candidate
will formulate and execute fundraising strategies and campaigns to secure necessary financial resources for the
short and longer-term needs of Maryvale. The new role is intended to both support Maryvale’s operational and
capital fundraising needs, and to provide leadership in fundraising and communications, which promote Maryvale
as an academically excellent and faithful Catholic independent elementary school. Stakeholders include
Maryvale’s Board of Directors, staff & families, alumni, donors and potential donors, the Catholic community, and
the general public.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan, promote, and implement fundraising and development initiatives that align with Maryvale’s Mission
    and Objectives, including through personal contact, telephone, direct mail, and social media campaigns.
  • Chair the Fundraising Committee and assist with other initiatives of the Board of Directors to articulate
    and implement a stewardship plan in accordance with ethical fundraising principles.
  • Develop, plan, and execute successful monthly and annual donor stewardship programs, Major Gifts and
    Planned Giving programs, and Capital Campaigns – including developing content for appeals, cases for
    support and campaign materials, coordinating meetings and events to grow our donor base, and
    producing practical strategies to solicit general donations, legacy gifts, and major gifts.
  • Ensure good stewardship and appreciation of Maryvale’s donors at all levels of giving, including meeting
    current and prospective donors or sponsors, coordinating donor appreciation events, and drafting thank
    you communications which are donor-centric and result in a quality experience for our supporters.
  • Manage the administrative duties included in fundraising, including management of database software of
    donor records, conducting donation analysis, and assisting with the issuance of accurate and timely tax
    receipts in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Support the volunteer Maryvale Gala committee to ensure the success of our annual signature event,
    and help identify and engage additional volunteers for fundraising efforts.
  • Report to the Board on development activities, including benchmarks of fundraising success, developing
    policies and procedures which reflect ethical fundraising practices, and manage a
    development/fundraising budget.
  • Integrate digital fundraising into stewardship efforts, including overseeing the creation, production and
    distribution of Maryvale communications to donors and supporters.
  • Serve as a representative of Maryvale Academy, dressing professionally, demonstrating the importance
    and relevance of an authentic Catholic education, demonstrating pride in the programs and methods of
    Maryvale Academy, promote Maryvale to supporters and prospects, and reinforce Maryvale events as
    required.

Characteristics of an Ideal Candidate:

  • Commitment to Maryvale’s Mission and Objectives, and an ability to effectively promote and
    communicate Maryvale’s identity and vision.
  • Experience in a similar role, with a successful track record of strategic fundraising, major gift or capital
    campaigns with successful revenue achievements.
  • Knowledge of philanthropic fundraising principles and best practices, including strategies and techniques
    to support cost-effective revenue generation.
  • Ability to build, manage, and maintain key donor/supporter/other stakeholder relationships.
  • Ability to evaluate current stewardship initiatives, and to identify, initiate, develop, and deliver new
    initiatives that build on their successes.
  • Have a reputation for personal integrity and high ethical standards, and ability to work with sensitive
    information with confidentiality.
  • Self-motivated and able to work autonomously, take initiative and make decisions within the scope of
    the role.
  • Communications and social media experience, to communicate effectively with donors, volunteers, and
    other community members.
  • Having knowledge of database donor software would be an asset.
